A Partnership....
HoodAid is a commercial project that has been developed by SIFE Southampton. The idea is to allow you to buy personalised hoodys and other products for your university clubs, societies and activities for a great price, where all profits will go to a university run charity project in Sierra Leone.
SIFE Southampton
SIFE is an international organisation designed to get groups of students working together to run small projects,
be them local or international, to create economic opportunity for others. Therefore every project aims to master a long term solution to a problem through sustainable management, education, facilitation and teamwork. Along the way every SIFE project is entered into an international competition against other enthusiastic students from around the world. SIFE is dedicated to nurturing the entrepreneurial skills of university students in a way that is both effective in developing their future careers and meaningful to the community.
......The Rice Project in Sierra Leone
All profits from your HoodAid purchase will go towards the development of a
rice cultivation project in the village of Jakadee, Sierra Leone.
By forming a partnership with Planting Promise and the local community, we have developed a piece of scrub land in the the village of Jakadee (near Makeni) into a productive, sustainable rice growing area. Rice used to be the standard, reliable crop in Sierra Leone. However, since the civil war, funds are low, resources are depleted and most fundamentally, spirits have been broken.
Through a step-by-step plan. Enterprising students from SIFE at Southampton University have researched and designed how to implement a new, more efficient method of rice cultivation (the SRI method). A trial season has taken place and the results couldn't of been better. Coupled with the training on how to best use it, their new equipment meant they were able to plant 4 times more crop this season than last. Not content with simply providing a community of over 1000 people with a larger income year on year, we needed to make sure other needs were being met. Together with Planting Promise and the communities themselves, we created a ‘community fund’. A certain amount of the profits made as a result of our investment will be put to one side and used for community projects – things that will help the community as a whole on a level beyond mere money, addressing other needs. Like what? Well, for instance, at present the people in our communities have to travel vast distances to obtain even the most basic of medical care. So, to tackle this problem, we are looking into building a medical center nearer to the villages.
